Robert Mueller Deserved Better

Robert Mueller was 81 years old when he died on March 20, 2026

According to Reuters, he served in Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He then spent decades serving the United States as a prosecutor, a Justice Department official, FBI director, and special counsel. Reuters went on to describe him as a decorated Vietnam veteran and longtime public servant whose career spanned Republican and Democratic administrations alike.

Regardless of our own political affiliations, it can’t be denied that he gave much of his life to serving this nation, and as the saying goes, “If you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, then don’t say anything.”

But Donald Trump’s response was far from silent.

It was not restrained.

It was not even a fake courtesy that most politicians manage when someone of his notoriety dies.

It was this: “Robert Mueller is Dead. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

That is just vile.

There isn’t a softer word for it.

It would be vile for any citizen.

It would be simply grotesque for any politician.

It is absolutely shameful for anyone occupying the highest office in the country. This is a position that is supposed to embody American strength and American values.

This is not strength. These are not our values.

It is moral ugliness.

It is the reaction of a petty, vindictive man so consumed by grievance that he could not let a man’s passing stand on its own. He could not let decades of military and public service receive even a moment of dignity. He had to make it about himself. He had to settle a score.

That is who he is.

And that is what he has dragged into the presidency.

The office of the president is supposed to demand some discipline of character. Not perfection. Not sainthood. Just a basic semblance of adulthood. And for Trump, we’re talking about lowering the bar nearly to the ground, and even then, he still manages to sink into the mud below.

There is, simply put, a need to sometimes know when to shut your damned mouth. Trump has never had that grace. He has spent years degrading the office by treating it less like public service and more like a throne to spew his hate. Every insult, every taunt, every sneering nickname, every juvenile grievance has stripped every ounce of decency from the most powerful position on earth.

It. Is. Shameful.

And this moment captures the rot from within perfectly.

A decorated veteran dies.

A former FBI director dies.

A man who spent his life in service to the government dies.

The president’s response is to gloat.

Not disagree respectfully.

Not keep his big mouth shut.

But, gloat.

That is not just unpresidential. It is disgusting and indecent.

It shows a level of thoughtlessness and vileness that would embarrass any decent person at a dinner table, let alone in the Oval Office. It reveals a man whose inner core is so corrupt that he sees cruelty as an act of power. Trump does not elevate the office. He soils it. He drags it down to the level of a bitter social media troll who revels in spewing hate for clicks.

A spawning sickness.

It is the movement that has learned to defend anything, excuse anything, and then act wounded when anyone points out what they have become.

Because let’s be honest about the hypocrisy.

If any liberal public figure said of Trump, “Good, I’m glad he’s dead,” the same people who now shrug at this would absolutely lose their freakin’minds! They would spend days screaming about decency. They would demand resignations. They would call it depraved. They would go on social media and insist that this person had crossed some terrible line.

That is what makes this even more contemptible.

They want moral rules only when those rules protect their side.

They want civility only when they can use it as a weapon.

They want empathy for Trump, endless empathy for Trump, while Trump shows none to anyone outside his own wounded ego.

That isn’t morality. It’s truly spineless.

Sean Covey

“Isn’t it kind of silly to think that tearing someone else down builds you up?”

At some point, a movement becomes responsible not only for what it says, but for what it tolerates. Trump’s supporters have tolerated lies, cruelty, corruption, threats, humiliation, and childish vindictiveness for so long that many of them no longer even recognize how degraded they have become.

They hear something monstrous and call it plain speaking. They watch something indecent and call it toughness. They excuse what would once have disgusted them because admitting the truth now would mean admitting that they have become what they once abhorred.

So they stay quiet.

Or worse, they defend it.

That silence is a moral choice.

Robert Mueller deserves better than that.

The presidency deserves better than that.

The country deserves better than that.

Instead, it got Donald Trump.
